The present dental health status of the children in the United States proposes a problem of access to care for low-socioeconomic status children. According to the 2000 Surgeon General’s report, tooth decay is the most mutual chronic childhood sickness in the United States. (1) Every year, children lose an approximated 52 million school hours due to dental-related problems. Children in poor families have 5 times more untreated cavities than children in families with higher incomes. Approximately 25 % of children living in poverty enter kindergarten without ever having seen a dentist. Twenty-three million children are without dental insurance coverage. (1,2)
